DFWSM Coed Rec Softball League By-Laws v25.04
DFWSM Core Values
- The Core Value of this league is to provide an experience to members of a diverse community of social FaceBook groups that include, but not limited to DFW Single Mingle, DFW Social Club, DFW Singles & Friends, and Little Elm Singles.
- Over time, the dynamics of how Admins run respective social groups have impacted the addition and growth of similar social groups where our community of friendship has cross-populated these diverse groups.
- The league’s top priority is to establish a foundation where friendships and social connections can grow where the common interest among the players is focused around participating in the softball league, without the top emphasis placed on competitive drive, skilled competency, and winning/losing.
- All members, regardless of past experience or skill are invited to participate and the league encourages a positive experience even to those who have limited experience in softball.
League Structure
- A league commissioner will be voted for to manage official disputes.
- The league commissioner’s priority will be to uphold the League’s Core Values, in conjunction with the rules provided by the city of Plano and the League’s by-Laws.
- A board of governors will be formed by the commissioner, comprised of 3 of the members of the league, none of which are on the same team.
- The board will evaluate the disputes submitted to the commissioner and render its decision
- The commissioner is only able to override the board’s decision of the decision violates the DFWSM Rules.
- The league players, and general public will not be informed who the members of the board of governors is. The commissioner will perform the duties of exchanging information between the teams and the board.
- This is so the board can render its decision without bias or scrutiny from the league coaches and/or players.
- As needed, rules are subject to be modified, or added to in order to maintain, or improve the league’s core values.
- Only the board of governors, by unanimous vote, can make changes to the DFWSM Coed Rec League rules.
DFWSM Rules
- Unless otherwise stated, the S&M Coed Rec softball league will adhere to the Slow-Pitch Softball By-Laws published by the City of Plano.
- Membership
- Teams required to be primarily formed with members of at least one of the DFW FaceBook Social Groups.
- Originally, the league was started by DFW Singles Mingles members, but the social circles where players can be recruited from have expanded to other FaceBook groups including, but not limited to DFW Singles & Friends, DFW Social Club, Little Elm Singles (just to name a few)
- Exceptions:
- Signficant other(s)
- Family
- Coworkers
- Restricted:
- Teams should refrain from recruiting skilled softball players from Social Groups formed for the primary purpose of athletic organization.
- Rosters
- Recruitment for roster players should be primarily performed by making public posts in one, or more, of the respective DFW FaceBook Social Groups.
- Team Rosters should have a minimum of 6 men & 6 women, however, additional players/subs (up to 20) can be added to avoid a circumstance that would prevent a valid lineup for scheduled games.
- Only players on a team's roster will be allowed to participate in playoffs.
- Players in the DFWSM league, without restrictions unless specified by the city of Plano, may participate on teams in other leagues, accepting the risk that scheduling conflicts when on the same day, may occur.
- The City of Plano is not responsible for modifying schedules to accommodate a team's or player's scheduling conflicts.
- When a team is faced with a shortage of available, roster players, substitutes will be allowed according to the rules stated for Substitutes.
- Substitutes
- The DFWSM will allow substitute players, only when the limited availability of players on the roster will cause an issue fielding a legitimate lineup.
- When sufficient notice is available, a request for a sub will be made by posting a Request in the DFWSM League Chat for a sub by indicating the Time, Field, and position needed (if relevant).
- A League chat member can respond with their availability and the team manager/delegate can confirm the sub(s) they need to have.
- Priority should be given to free agents/subs who are not already a member of an existing team.
- If a legitimate sub is not available, then a player from another team may be used.
- When two, or more members from other teams are available then the Team manager/coach may choose the player(s) they need from those who expressed their availability.
- Substitute players should only be used when the lack of a sub prevents the team from fielding a legitimate lineup.
- A Request for a sub should not be made for the sole intention of having an even number of men/women if there are already at least 5 men & 5 women available to play from the team's roster.
- Highly-Skilled Teams
- The league welcomes teams comprised of players of all skills, and encourages a mix of advanced, intermediate, and beginner levels.
- The league is opposed to teams being comprised of entirely advanced players.
- Teams that would be subject to the City's classification of Non-Rec will be required to make roster changes, by adding and playing enough recreational players in order to keep our league recreationally competitive.
- Under most conditions, up to 3 advanced male and 2 advanced female players can be in a team's lineup.
- The discretion of an individual player's classification will be determined by the board of governors.
- An appeal on an individual classification can be submitted to the commissioner and the board will objectively evaluate the classification.
- It is in the best interests of the league when at minimum the top (3+) teams in the league are relatively equallly competitive.
Topics of Discussion
- Season Rosters by Draft
- Active members who have indicated an interest in participating in the DFWSM league will provide the following information to the commissioner:
- Position(s) they will play and positions they won't play
- People they prefer not to play with
- One, if applicable, person they require to play with (ie. Significant other, child, etc.)
- Availability (Regular or Sub)
- (If a substitute, preference to remain in the league free agent sub list, or added as a sub to an existing team)
- Desire to be a Team Captain (Y|N)
- Based on the number of eligible players, team captains will be picked from a hat.
- In a randomly selected order, each captain will pick a "regular" player from the pool of eligible players.
- Team captains should manage their roster wisely by selecting players to fill all 10 fielding positions.
- Draft will accommodate at between 12-14 regulars.
- Subs choosing to be drafted will be drafted after all regulars have been selected.
- Each season a new draft will take place.
- One downside is that each season, should each team be required to get new jerseys (TBD)?
